Ras (रस) is the feeling or the joy that a reader or a listener gets from a poem, a story or a play. In SSC Hindi, the question is usually: "Find the ras in the given lines" or "What is the sthayi bhav of karun ras?" These ras in Hindi notes for SSC give the nine ras with their sthayi bhav, one example of each, and a simple trick to identify the ras.
Four Parts (Ang) of a Ras
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| स्थायी भाव | The main feeling which stays in the mind (love, anger, fear) |
| विभाव | The cause that creates the feeling (the person or the place) |
| अनुभाव | The outward signs of the feeling (tears, smile, trembling) |
| संचारी भाव | The passing feelings that come and go (33 in all) |
Nine Ras and Their Sthayi Bhav
| रस | स्थायी भाव | Meaning of the feeling |
|---|---|---|
| श्रृंगार रस | रति | Love |
| हास्य रस | हास | Laughter |
| करुण रस | शोक | Sorrow |
| रौद्र रस | क्रोध | Anger |
| वीर रस | उत्साह | Courage and enthusiasm |
| भयानक रस | भय | Fear |
| वीभत्स रस | जुगुप्सा (घृणा) | Disgust |
| अद्भुत रस | विस्मय | Wonder |
| शांत रस | निर्वेद | Calm and detachment |
Some books add वात्सल्य रस (sthayi bhav: वत्सलता, the love of parents for the child) as the tenth ras, and भक्ति रस (sthayi bhav: देव-विषयक रति or अनुराग) as the eleventh. SSC questions can ask about them.
Examples of Each Ras
| रस | Typical lines or idea |
|---|---|
| श्रृंगार | Love between lovers, the beauty of the beloved, separation (वियोग) and meeting (संयोग) |
| हास्य | Funny dress, funny speech or funny actions, as in a satire |
| करुण | Death of a loved one, a widow’s cry, poverty and misery (as in Nirala’s "सरोज स्मृति") |
| रौद्र | Anger of Parshuram or Lakshman in the Ramcharitmanas, "श्रीकृष्ण के सुन वचन अर्जुन क्षोभ से जलने लगे" |
| वीर | Poems on war and bravery, such as "खूब लड़ी मर्दानी वह तो झाँसी वाली रानी थी" |
| भयानक | Description of a dark forest, a lion or a storm that creates fear |
| वीभत्स | Description of a battlefield with corpses, blood and vultures |
| अद्भुत | Wonder at a miracle, as when Yashoda sees the whole universe in the mouth of Krishna |
| शांत | Poems on peace, renunciation and the end of desires, such as the dohas of Kabir |
Trick to Identify the Ras
- Read the lines and find the strongest feeling: love, laughter, sorrow, anger, courage, fear, disgust, wonder or peace.
- Match that feeling with the sthayi bhav in the table.
- Read the key words: मृत्यु, रोना, दुख for करुण; युद्ध, तलवार, साहस for वीर; मरघट, लाश, खून for वीभत्स; वन, अँधेरा, काँपना for भयानक.
