AmountP + SI
PrincipalSI × 100 / (R × T)
RateSI × 100 / (P × T)
TimeSI × 100 / (P × R)
Sum doubles in T yearsR = 100/T %
Sum becomes n times in T yearsR = 100(n − 1)/T %

Compound Interest

ItemFormula
AmountP(1 + R/100)^n

Half-yearlyRate R/2 and time 2n
QuarterlyRate R/4 and time 4n

3 yearsP R²(300 + R)/100³

Effective Rate Table (CI for 2 and 3 Years)

Rate per yearCI for 2 years (% of P)CI for 3 years (% of P)
5%10.25%15.76%
10%21%33.1%
20%44%72.8%
25%56.25%95.3%

The effective rate for 2 years is R + R²/100 %. For example, at 10%: 10 + 1 = 11 and 10 + 11 = 21%. Check: 1.1 × 1.1 = 1.21.

Solved Examples

Example 1. Find the SI on 5,000 rupees at 8% for 3 years.
1,200 rupees.

Example 2. Find the CI on 8,000 rupees at 10% for 2 years.
21% of 8,000 = 1,680 rupees.

Example 3. Find the difference of CI and SI on 5,000 rupees at 10% for 2 years.
5000 × 1/100 = 50 rupees.

Example 4. Find the CI on 10,000 rupees at 10% for 1 year, compounded half-yearly.
At 5% for 2 half-years: 10.25% of 10,000 = 1,025 rupees.

Example 5. Find the CI on 1,000 rupees at 20% for 3 years.
72.8% of 1,000 = 728 rupees.

Quick Tips

  • Use the effective rate table for CI of 2 and 3 years.
  • The CI of 2 years at R% is R + R²/100 %.
  • Use half the rate and double the time for half-yearly compounding.
  • Remember that for 1 year SI and CI are equal.

Quick Revision Points

  • SI = PRT/100.
  • A = P(1 + R/100)^n.
  • CI minus SI for 2 years = P(R/100)².
  • At 10% the CI for 2 years is 21% and for 3 years is 33.1%.
  • The half-yearly rate is R/2 and the time is 2n.
