SSC Reasoning Notes: Topic-wise Preparation Guide for General Intelligence

The Reasoning section of SSC exams, officially called General Intelligence and Reasoning, checks how quickly and logically you can read a pattern and reach the correct answer. Unlike Quantitative Aptitude it does not need heavy formulas. It needs a clear method for every question type and plenty of practice. These SSC Reasoning notes explain each topic in simple language, show the standard approach and give solved examples in the same style as SSC question papers.

The notes are useful for SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD Constable, CPO, Stenographer and other exams that include a reasoning section. Whether you are starting from zero or revising before an exam, you can follow the topic order below and use these Reasoning notes for SSC as your single reference.

What You Get in These Reasoning Notes

  • Topic-wise method for every verbal and non-verbal question type
  • Rules, tables and memory tricks for quick revision
  • Solved examples with the shortest possible approach
  • Common traps and mistakes that cost marks
  • Free online reading and PDF downloads for selected topics

Why Reasoning Is a High-Scoring Section

Each reasoning question is short, and a well-prepared candidate can solve most of them in under 40 seconds. In SSC CGL and CHSL Tier 1, the section has 25 questions, so a good Reasoning score builds the cushion that you need for tougher sections. Because question patterns repeat across years, previous year papers are the best source of practice.

Verbal Reasoning Notes

1. Analogy and Classification

In analogy, find the exact relationship between the first pair and apply it to the second pair. Common relations are tool and user, part and whole, cause and effect, synonym and antonym, and number patterns such as squares, cubes and multiples. In classification (odd one out), look for the property that three items share and the fourth does not, such as category, number property or letter position.

2. Series

  • Number series: check differences, ratios, squares, cubes, prime numbers and alternate patterns. In 2, 6, 12, 20, 30 the differences are 4, 6, 8, 10, so the next term is 42.
  • Alphabet series: convert letters to positions (A=1, Z=26) and look for a fixed jump or alternating jumps.
  • Missing and wrong term: find the pattern from the clearly correct terms and test the doubtful one.

3. Coding-Decoding

Remember the alphabet positions and the useful anchor letters: E=5, J=10, O=15, T=20, Y=25. For the opposite letter, the positions of a letter and its opposite add up to 27 (A-Z, B-Y, C-X). Common coding types are letter shifting (+1, -2), reversing, position values, substitution and number-letter mixing. Always write the code of the given word beside the original word before solving.

4. Blood Relations

Draw a family tree with symbols: use a plus for male and a minus for female, a horizontal line for a married couple and a vertical line for a child. Break coded relations into small steps. Example: pointing to a man, a woman says, "His mother is the only daughter of my mother." The only daughter of her mother is herself, so the man is her son.

5. Direction and Distance

Draw the path on paper with North up. A right turn changes North to East, East to South, South to West and West to North, and a left turn does the opposite. For the shortest distance use the Pythagoras theorem. Example: a person walks 5 km north, turns right and walks 3 km, then turns right again and walks 5 km. He is 3 km east of the starting point.

6. Order, Ranking and Arrangement

  • Total persons in a row = rank from left + rank from right - 1.
  • To find the position from the other end, subtract the given position from total + 1.
  • For seating arrangement, always start with the most definite statement and fix that person first. In circular arrangements, check whether people face the centre or outside.

7. Syllogism and Venn Diagrams

  • All A are B + All B are C gives All A are C.
  • All A are B + No B is C gives No A is C.
  • Some A are B + All B are C gives Some A are C.
  • Some A are B + No B is C gives Some A are not C.
  • Use Venn diagrams to check possibility. A conclusion is correct only if it is true in every possible diagram.

8. Mathematical Operations and Inequality

Replace the symbols as per the given instructions first, then apply BODMAS. In coded inequalities, convert the symbols into mathematical signs and combine the statements in a chain, such as A greater than B greater than C, to test the conclusions.

9. Calendar and Clock

  • In the calendar, an ordinary year has 1 odd day and a leap year has 2. 100 years have 5 odd days, 200 years have 3, 300 years have 1 and 400 years have 0.
  • The angle between the hands of a clock at H hours and M minutes = |30H - 5.5M| degrees. At 4:30 it is |120 - 165| = 45 degrees.
  • The minute hand moves 6 degrees per minute and the hour hand moves 0.5 degree per minute. The hands overlap 11 times in 12 hours.

Non-Verbal Reasoning Notes

  • Mirror image: left and right are interchanged. In a water image, top and bottom are interchanged.
  • Paper folding and cutting: unfold step by step and mirror the cut on the fold line.
  • Embedded figures and counting figures: count systematically, starting from the smallest shape and moving to combined shapes.
  • Dice and cubes: in a standard die the opposite faces add up to 7, but always check the given picture. For an n x n x n cube painted on all faces and cut into unit cubes: 8 cubes have 3 painted faces, 12(n - 2) have 2 painted faces, 6(n - 2) squared have 1 painted face, and (n - 2) cubed have no painted face.
  • Figure series and analogy: look for rotation, shading, addition or removal of lines, and movement in a fixed direction.

How to Prepare Reasoning Step by Step

  1. Pick one topic and learn the method from the note instead of trying random questions first.
  2. Solve 15 to 20 questions of that topic and note down the questions that took more than a minute.
  3. Maintain a short notebook of tricks, such as alphabet positions and opposite letter pairs.
  4. Take one sectional test every week and compare your accuracy with the previous week.
  5. In the last month, solve complete reasoning sections from previous year papers within the time limit.

Tips to Avoid Silly Mistakes

  • Read the question fully before applying a trick. Many questions change one small condition.
  • Do not guess in syllogism. Draw a quick Venn diagram for each statement.
  • In non-verbal questions, check rotation and reflection separately.
  • Do not spend more than 60 seconds on a single question. Mark it and move on.

Practise and Revise

After finishing a few topics, attempt the reasoning sections of our SSC previous year papers and the practice papers. For a complete plan, also read the notes of Quantitative Aptitude and English.

Frequently Asked Questions About SSC Notes

Where can I read SSC Reasoning notes for free?

All Reasoning notes on this page are free to read online without signup. Open any topic, learn the method, study the solved examples and download the PDF wherever it is available for offline revision.

Are these Reasoning notes enough for SSC CGL, CHSL and MTS?

They cover the complete verbal and non-verbal reasoning syllabus asked in SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD and CPO exams. Combine them with daily practice and previous year papers to build speed, because Reasoning is mainly a practice-based subject.

Is Reasoning easy to score in SSC exams?

Yes, for most candidates it is one of the easiest sections. Questions are short, patterns repeat across years, and once you know the method a question can be solved in 30 to 40 seconds.

Which Reasoning topics are asked the most?

Analogy, Classification, Number and Alphabet Series, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Direction Sense, Order and Ranking, Syllogism, Venn Diagrams, Mathematical Operations, Calendar, Clock, Dice and non-verbal topics like Mirror Image, Paper Folding and Embedded Figures appear almost every year.

How can I improve my speed in Reasoning?

Learn the standard trick of every question type, avoid long diagrams when a short method exists, and practise with a timer. A target of 25 questions in 15 to 18 minutes leaves enough time for other sections.

How do I solve Syllogism questions quickly?

Draw a quick Venn diagram for each statement, check all possible cases and accept a conclusion only when it is true in every case. Memorise the basic rules: All + All gives All, All + No gives No, Some + All gives Some.

What is the easiest way to learn alphabet and coding questions?

Memorise the alphabet positions, especially E=5, J=10, O=15, T=20 and Y=25, and the opposite-letter pairs such as A-Z, B-Y and C-X. These make letter shifting and mirror-type coding very fast.

How should I prepare non-verbal reasoning?

Practise visual patterns daily. Learn the rules for rotation, reflection, shading, adding and removing parts, and for paper folding and cutting. Non-verbal reasoning needs practice more than theory, so solve at least 10 figure questions every day.

How many Reasoning questions come in SSC CGL Tier 1?

SSC CGL Tier 1 and CHSL Tier 1 contain 25 General Intelligence and Reasoning questions out of 100. Always check the latest official notification for any change in the pattern.

How much time do I need to finish the Reasoning syllabus?

With two hours of daily study, the whole syllabus can be covered in three to four weeks. Spend the following weeks on practice, mock tests and revision of weak topics.

Are Reasoning notes useful for other competitive exams?

Yes. The same topics are asked in Railway, Banking, State PSC, police and defence exams, so these notes help you in many competitive exams along with SSC.

What mistakes should I avoid in Reasoning?

Do not guess in syllogism, do not skip reading the full question, and do not spend more than a minute on a single question. Also avoid learning too many tricks without practice, because tricks work only when you apply them often.
