A mnemonic is a memory aid that turns difficult lists into a phrase or a story that is easy to remember. This guide on chemistry and periodic table mnemonics for SSC gives you memory tricks for the first 20 elements, the reactivity series, the main groups of the periodic table and the Latin symbols of the elements, with the correct facts behind each trick, practice questions and FAQs.

Note: the sentences are memory aids made for easy recall; they are not official. Check the actual facts in the tables.

The First 20 Elements

The order: H, He, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca.

Group of Elements Mnemonic Sentence
H, He, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F, Ne (1–10) Happy Henry Likes Beer But Could Not Obtain Food Nearby
Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca (11–20) Nancy Mgight Also Sing Pop Songs, Clapping Arms Keenly, Carefully
Number Element Symbol
1 Hydrogen H
2 Helium He
3 Lithium Li

Reactivity Series of Metals

From the most reactive to the least: K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al, (C), Zn, Fe, Sn, Pb, (H), Cu, Hg, Ag, Au.

Mnemonic Sentence Metals
Please Stop Calling Me A, Careless Zebra Instead Try Learning How Copper Saves Gold Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Aluminium, Carbon, Zinc, Iron, Tin, Lead, Hydrogen, Copper, Silver, Gold

Mercury (Hg) is usually placed between copper and silver. Remember that metals above hydrogen displace it from dilute acids, and that the highly reactive metals (K, Na) are kept under kerosene.

Groups of the Periodic Table

Group Elements Mnemonic
Group 1: alkali metals Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr Little Naughty Kids Rub Cats’ Fur
Group 2: alkaline earth metals Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra Big Men Carry Small Bags, Rarely
Group 17: halogens F, Cl, Br, I, At Fluffy Cats Bring Ice-cream Always
Group 18: noble gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn Hello Neighbour, Are Kind Xena Running?
Group 16: chalcogens O, S, Se, Te, Po Old Sea Shells Tell Past stories

Latin Names Behind the Symbols

Element Symbol Latin Name Memory Trick
Sodium Na Natrium Na for Natrium
Potassium K Kalium K for Kalium
Iron Fe Ferrum Ferrum → Fe (ferrous)
Copper Cu Cuprum Cuprum → Cu
Silver Ag Argentum Argentina is the land of silver; Ag
Gold Au Aurum Aurum → Au (aureole = golden halo)
Lead Pb Plumbum A plumber uses lead pipes; Pb
Mercury Hg Hydrargyrum Hg: liquid silver
Tin Sn Stannum Stannum → Sn
Tungsten W Wolfram W for Wolfram
Antimony Sb Stibium Stibium → Sb

Other Chemistry Memory Aids

Topic Memory Aid
Liquid elements at room temperature Mercury (metal) and bromine (non-metal); both begin with letters of the “M” and “B”: Many Boys are liquid
Hardest natural substance Diamond (an allotrope of carbon)
Lightest element Hydrogen
Most abundant element in the earth’s crust Oxygen, then silicon and aluminium (O, Si, Al)
Most abundant gas in the air Nitrogen (78%), then oxygen (21%)
Noble gases are inert Their outer shell is full: He has 2 and the others have 8 electrons
Acids turn blue litmus red A for Acid and R for Red; bases turn red litmus blue

How to Use Mnemonics

  • Say the sentence aloud while writing the list.
  • Make your own sentence if it is easier: a personal sentence is the easiest to recall.
  • Revise the mnemonic after one day, one week and one month.
  • Always check the actual facts from a table once; a mnemonic helps the order only.

Quick Tips

  • Make your own mnemonic sentence if you like.
  • Revise the mnemonics at intervals.
  • Check the order with the table once.
  • Remember mercury and bromine are the liquid elements.

Quick Revision Points

  • The first 20 elements: H, He, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca.
  • The reactivity series starts with potassium and ends with gold.
  • Na is natrium; K is kalium; Fe is ferrum; Au is aurum.
  • Group 17 is halogens; group 18 is noble gases.
  • Mercury and bromine are liquids at room temperature.
