The Five Oceans
| Ocean | Facts |
|---|---|
| Pacific Ocean | Largest and deepest; the Mariana Trench (Challenger Deep, about 11,000 m) is the deepest point; the Ring of Fire surrounds it |
| Atlantic Ocean | Second largest; S-shaped; the busiest for trade; the Sargasso Sea is in it; the Puerto Rico Trench is the deepest point |
| Indian Ocean | The only ocean named after a country; third largest; Java Trench is its deepest point |
| Southern (Antarctic) Ocean | Around Antarctica; the fifth ocean recognised in 2000 |
| Arctic Ocean | Smallest and shallowest; mostly covered with ice |
Important Straits
| Strait | Connects | Between |

| Bering Strait | Arctic and Pacific Oceans | Alaska (USA) and Russia |
| Strait of Malacca | Indian Ocean and South China Sea (Pacific) | Malaysia and Indonesia (Sumatra); Singapore at its southern end |
| Strait of Gibraltar | Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea | Spain and Morocco |
| Strait of Hormuz | Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman | Iran and Oman (UAE) |
| Bab-el-Mandeb | Red Sea and Gulf of Aden | Yemen and Djibouti/Eritrea |
| Bosphorus and Dardanelles | Black Sea, Sea of Marmara and Aegean Sea | Turkey |
| Palk Strait | Bay of Bengal and Gulf of Mannar | India and Sri Lanka |
| Strait of Dover | English Channel and North Sea | England and France |
| Strait of Magellan | Atlantic and Pacific Oceans | Southern tip of Chile |

Important Canals
| Canal | Connects | Facts |
|---|---|---|
| Suez Canal | Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea | Opened in 1869; Egypt; shortens the route between Europe and Asia |
| Panama Canal | Atlantic and Pacific Oceans | Opened in 1914; Panama; has locks |
| Kiel Canal | North Sea and Baltic Sea | Germany |
| Grand Canal | Beijing and Hangzhou | China; the longest artificial waterway |
Ocean Currents
| Warm Currents | Cold Currents |
|---|---|
| Gulf Stream (North Atlantic) | Labrador Current (North Atlantic) |
| North Atlantic Drift | Canary Current |
| Brazil Current | Benguela Current |
| Kuroshio (Japan Current) | Humboldt (Peru) Current |
| Agulhas Current | California Current |
| East Australian Current | West Australian Current |
| Florida Current | Oyashio (Kuril) Current |
| North Equatorial and South Equatorial Currents | Falkland Current |
- Warm currents flow from the equator towards the poles; cold currents flow from the polar regions towards the equator.
- Where a warm and a cold current meet, fog and rich fishing grounds develop, for example the Grand Banks near Newfoundland (Gulf Stream and Labrador Current).
- The Humboldt Current reduces the rainfall on the west coast of South America and is linked to El Niño.
- The Gulf Stream and the North Atlantic Drift keep the ports of Northwest Europe ice-free.
- In the Indian Ocean the direction of currents changes with the monsoon; the Somali Current is one of them.
Important Seas, Gulfs and Bays
| Name | Facts |
|---|---|
| Dead Sea | Lowest point on land (about 430 m below sea level); highly saline; between Israel, Jordan and the West Bank |
| Sargasso Sea | Sea without a coast in the North Atlantic; floating seaweed |
