Types of computers is a basic topic of SSC Computer Knowledge, and questions are asked on the classification by size, the data they process and their purpose. These types of computers notes for SSC explain each type with simple examples, tables and practice questions. Read it along with the Generations of Computers Notes and Input and Output Devices Notes notes.
Classification of Computers
| Basis | Types |
|---|---|
| Size and power | Supercomputer, mainframe, minicomputer, microcomputer |
| Type of data | Analog, digital, hybrid |
| Purpose | General-purpose and special-purpose |
| Use | Desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone, workstation, server, embedded |
Types by Size and Power
| Type | Features | Examples and use |
|---|---|---|
| Supercomputer | The fastest and most powerful, speed is measured in FLOPS, used for complex calculations | Weather forecasting, space research, nuclear simulation; PARAM series of India, Cray-1 |
| Mainframe | Large and powerful, supports hundreds of users at the same time | Banks, airlines, railways, census; IBM zSeries |
| Minicomputer | Medium size, between a mainframe and a microcomputer | Small companies, labs; PDP-11 |
| Microcomputer | Small and cheap, built around a microprocessor, used by one person | Desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone |
Types by Data They Process
- Analog computers work on continuous data such as temperature, speed or pressure. Examples: speedometer, thermometer, voltmeter.
- Digital computers work on discrete data in the form of 0s and 1s. Examples: desktop, laptop, calculator.
- Hybrid computers combine the features of analog and digital computers. Examples: ICU machines in a hospital, petrol pump machines, ECG machines.
Types of Microcomputers and Special Machines
- Desktop: a computer kept on a desk, with a separate monitor and CPU.
- Laptop or notebook: a portable computer with a battery.
- Tablet and smartphone: touch-screen portable devices.
- Workstation: a powerful single-user computer used for graphics and design.
- Server: a computer that provides services and data to other computers on a network.
- Embedded computer: a small computer inside a device, such as a washing machine or an ATM.
Supercomputers in Detail
A supercomputer is the fastest class of computer. It has thousands of processors that work in parallel and is used for tasks that need enormous calculation, such as weather and climate forecasting, space research, drug discovery, nuclear simulation, earthquake study and artificial intelligence training. The speed of supercomputers is measured in FLOPS (floating-point operations per second): teraflops (10 to the power 12), petaflops (10 to the power 15) and exaflops (10 to the power 18).
- The first supercomputer is considered to be the CDC 6600 (1964) designed by Seymour Cray; the Cray-1 (1976) became the most famous.
- India's PARAM series was made by C-DAC. PARAM 8000 (1991) was the first, PARAM Yuva II and PARAM Siddhi-AI (2020) are later ones.
- Pratyush (Pune, IITM) and Mihir (NCMRWF, Noida) are Indian supercomputers used for weather forecasting.
- The ranking of the world's fastest supercomputers is published twice a year as the TOP500 list, so the name of the number one machine changes. Always read the latest news before the exam.
Mainframe, Mini and Micro Computers Compared
| Point | Supercomputer | Mainframe | Minicomputer | Microcomputer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Size | Very large | Large | Medium | Small |
| Speed | Highest | High | Medium | Lower |
| Users at a time | Many scientists (shared) | Hundreds to thousands | Tens to hundreds | One |
| Cost | Highest | Very high | High | Low |
| Main use | Scientific calculation | Banking, airlines, government records | Small business, labs, process control | Home, office and school work |
| Examples | Cray-1, PARAM series | IBM zSeries, UNIVAC | PDP-11, VAX | Desktop, laptop, tablet |
A mainframe is built for reliability and a huge number of transactions, while a supercomputer is built for raw calculation speed. This is the most common difference asked in the exam.
Microcomputers and Their Forms
| Form | Features |
|---|---|
| Desktop PC | Placed on a table; has a separate CPU cabinet, monitor, keyboard and mouse; more powerful and cheaper than a laptop |
| All-in-one PC | The monitor and the CPU are built in one unit |
| Laptop (notebook) | Portable with a built-in screen, keyboard, touchpad and battery |
| Netbook | A small, low-cost laptop mostly for the internet |
| Tablet | A touch-screen portable device without a physical keyboard |
| Smartphone | A mobile phone with the power of a small computer |
| PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) | A pocket device for the calendar, contacts and notes; replaced by smartphones |
| Workstation | A high-performance single-user computer used for graphics, engineering and video editing |
| Server | A computer that gives data, files, web pages or email to other computers (clients) in a network |
| Wearables | Smart watches and fitness bands |
| Embedded computers | Computers built inside machines, such as a washing machine, a microwave oven, a car or an ATM |
Analog, Digital and Hybrid Computers Compared
| Point | Analog | Digital | Hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data | Continuous (physical quantities) | Discrete (0s and 1s) | Both |
| Accuracy | Less accurate | More accurate | Accurate |
| Memory | Little or none | Large storage | Has storage |
| Examples | Thermometer, speedometer, voltmeter, analog clock | Calculator, PC, laptop, smartphone | ICU and ECG machines, petrol pump, weather systems |
| Output | Reading on a dial or a graph | Numbers and text | Both |
General-Purpose and Special-Purpose Computers
- A general-purpose computer can do many kinds of tasks by running different programs, such as a PC.
- A special-purpose (dedicated) computer is built for only one task, such as a computer in a traffic signal, an ATM, a washing machine or a missile guidance system.
- Special-purpose computers are faster and cheaper for their single task but cannot be used for anything else.
Other Terms Asked in SSC
- Client is a computer that asks for a service and a server gives it.
- Portable computer is a computer that can be carried easily.
- Palmtop is a computer small enough to fit in the palm.
- Terminal (dumb terminal) has a keyboard and a screen but no processing power; it is connected to a mainframe.
- Node is any computer or device connected to a network.
