Reinforced concrete (RCC) design is a high-scoring part of the SSC JE Civil syllabus because the questions are based on IS 456:2000 and a few standard formulas. This guide on RCC design for SSC JE covers the methods of design, the limit state parameters, the IS code rules for beams, slabs and columns, the nominal cover and development length, with solved examples, practice questions and FAQs.
Basics of Reinforced Concrete
- Concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension; steel bars carry the tension.
- The code of practice is IS 456:2000 (Plain and Reinforced Concrete); for steel, IS 800:2007.
- Grades of concrete: M20, M25, M30 etc., where the number is the characteristic compressive strength fck in N/mm² at 28 days (150 mm cube); minimum grade for RCC is M20.
- Grades of steel: Fe 250, Fe 415 and Fe 500 (the number is the yield strength fy in N/mm²); Fe 415 and Fe 500 are high-yield strength deformed (HYSD) bars.
- Modulus of elasticity of concrete: Ec = 5000√fck N/mm²; for steel Es = 2 × 10⁵ N/mm².
- Modular ratio in the working stress method: m = 280 / (3σcbc); for M20 (σcbc = 7), m = 13.33.
Methods of Design
| Method | Features |
|---|---|
| Working Stress Method (WSM) | Elastic theory; stresses under working loads are kept within permissible limits; factor of safety applied on stresses; modular ratio used |
| Limit State Method (LSM) | Probabilistic approach; considers the limit state of collapse and serviceability; partial safety factors on loads and materials; adopted in IS 456:2000 |
| Ultimate Load Method | Based on the ultimate load capacity of sections |
Limit State Method: Key Values
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Partial safety factor for concrete (γc) | 1.5 |
| Partial safety factor for steel (γs) | 1.15 |
| Partial safety factor for loads (dead + live) | 1.5 |
| Design strength of concrete | 0.67 fck / 1.5 = 0.446 fck |
| Design strength of steel | 0.87 fy |
| Ultimate strain in concrete in compression | 0.0035 |
| Limiting depth of the neutral axis xu,max/d | 0.53 (Fe 250), 0.48 (Fe 415), 0.46 (Fe 500) |
| Mu,lim | 0.138 fck b d² (Fe 415); 0.148 fck b d² (Fe 250); 0.133 fck b d² (Fe 500) |
Types of Sections
| Section | Condition |
|---|---|
| Under-reinforced | xu < xu,max; steel yields first; ductile failure; the preferred design |
| Balanced | xu = xu,max; steel and concrete reach their limits together |
| Over-reinforced | xu > xu,max; concrete crushes first; brittle failure; avoided |
Beams
- Minimum tension steel: As/(bd) ≥ 0.85/fy.
- Maximum tension steel: 4% of bD (the gross area).
- The effective span of a simply supported beam is the lesser of the clear span plus the effective depth, or the centre-to-centre distance of the supports.
- Shear: nominal shear stress τv = Vu/(bd); shear reinforcement is in the form of vertical stirrups or bent-up bars.
- Depth to span ratios: simply supported 20, continuous 26, cantilever 7 (for spans up to 10 m).
- Minimum clear spacing between bars: the largest of the bar diameter, the maximum size of aggregate + 5 mm and 20 mm.
Slabs
- A slab is one-way if ly/lx > 2 (main steel in the short span only), and two-way if the ratio ≤ 2.
- Distribution (secondary) steel in a one-way slab is 0.15% of the gross area for Fe 250 and 0.12% for Fe 415 and Fe 500.
- Maximum diameter of bars in slabs is not more than one-eighth of the total thickness of the slab.
- Maximum spacing of main bars is the smaller of 3d and 300 mm; of distribution bars 5d and 450 mm.
- Torsion reinforcement is needed at the corners of a simply supported two-way slab.
Columns
| Item | IS 456 Rule |
|---|---|
| Minimum eccentricity | The larger of l/500 + D/30 and 20 mm |
| Short column | Effective length / least lateral dimension ≤ 12 |
| Minimum longitudinal steel | 0.8% of the gross cross-sectional area |
| Maximum longitudinal steel | 6% (4% is recommended at laps) |
| Minimum number of bars | 4 in a rectangular column; 6 in a circular column |
| Minimum diameter of longitudinal bars | 12 mm |
| Lateral ties | Diameter not less than one-fourth of the largest main bar and not less than 6 mm |
| Pitch of ties | The least of the least lateral dimension, 16 times the smallest main bar diameter and 300 mm |
| Axial load capacity of a short column | Pu = 0.4 fck Ac + 0.67 fy Asc |
Nominal Cover
| Member or Exposure | Nominal Cover |
|---|---|
| Mild exposure | 20 mm |
| Moderate exposure | 30 mm |
| Severe | 45 mm |
| Footings in contact with soil | 50 mm |
| Columns (minimum) | 40 mm (or the bar diameter, whichever is more) |
| Slabs (mild) | 20 mm |
| Beams (mild) | 25 mm |
Development Length
Ld = φ σs / (4 τbd), where φ is the bar diameter, σs is the stress in the bar (0.87 fy at the design load) and τbd is the design bond stress. For M20 with plain bars τbd = 1.2 N/mm², and for deformed bars it is increased by 60%.
Solved Examples
Example 1. Find Mu,lim for a beam of 250 mm width and 450 mm effective depth, with M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
Mu,lim = 0.138 × 20 × 250 × 450² = 139.7 kN m.
Example 2. Find the minimum tension steel for the same beam.
(0.85/415) × 250 × 450 = 230 mm².
Example 3. A slab is 3 m × 7 m, supported on all four sides. Is it one-way or two-way?
ly/lx = 7/3 = 2.33, which is more than 2, so it is a one-way slab.
Example 4. What is the minimum number of longitudinal bars in a circular column?
6.
Quick Tips
- Memorise the values of xu,max/d for the three grades of steel.
- Remember the 0.85/fy minimum steel in beams.
- Remember the slab rule ly/lx = 2.
- Learn the column steel limits 0.8% and 6%.
Quick Revision Points
