The verb in a sentence must agree with its subject in number and person. This rule, called subject-verb agreement or concord, is the base of most error spotting questions in SSC exams. This guide on subject-verb agreement for SSC gives the 20 most important rules in a table with examples, followed by solved questions, tricks and practice questions.
Basic Rule
A singular subject takes a singular verb and a plural subject takes a plural verb. In the present tense, a singular verb usually ends in -s or -es (He plays, She goes), and a plural verb has no -s (They play).
20 Important Rules
| No. | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Two singular subjects joined by and take a plural verb | Ram and Shyam are friends. |
| 2 | If two nouns joined by and refer to one person or thing, the verb is singular | Bread and butter is my breakfast. |
| 3 | Subjects joined by or, nor, either…or, neither…nor: the verb agrees with the nearer subject | Neither the teacher nor the students were present. |
| 4 | Each, every, either, neither, one, anyone, everyone, nobody take a singular verb | Each of the boys has a book. |
| 5 | One of the + plural noun takes a singular verb | One of my friends is a doctor. |
| 6 | Words joined by with, as well as, along with, together with, in addition to: the verb agrees with the first subject | The teacher, along with the students, is going. |
| 7 | Collective nouns (team, jury, class) take a singular verb when taken as a unit | The team has won the match. |
| 8 | Collective nouns take a plural verb when members are taken separately | The committee are divided in their opinion. |

| 17 | Fractions and percentages agree with the noun after of | Two-thirds of the work is done. Two-thirds of the students are absent. |
| 18 | In there is / there are, the verb agrees with the noun that follows | There are many books on the table. |
| 19 | Relative pronouns who, which, that take the verb of their antecedent | He is one of those who work hard. |
| 20 | When either or neither is used without a following of, the verb is singular | Either of the two is enough. |
Tricky Points
- After “one of the”, the noun is plural but the verb is singular: “One of the books is missing.”
- After “one of those who”, the verb is plural: “He is one of those who are always late.”
- With “the majority”, the verb is singular if it means the group and plural if it means the persons.
- “Not only… but also” works like “or”: the verb agrees with the nearer subject.
