Computer networks are asked every year in SSC Computer Knowledge. The questions are about the types of networks, the topologies and the work of devices such as a router, a switch and a modem. These computer network notes for SSC explain them with tables and practice questions. Read it with the Internet and Networking Notes and Internet Protocols Notes notes.

What Is a Computer Network?

A computer network is a group of computers and devices connected to share data and resources such as files, printers and the internet. Each computer or device in a network is called a node.

Types of Networks

Type Full form Area covered Example
PAN Personal Area Network Around one person (a few metres) Bluetooth, mobile hotspot
LAN Local Area Network A room, building or school Office or computer lab
MAN Metropolitan Area Network A city Cable TV network
WAN Wide Area Network Country or world The internet

Network Topologies

Topology Features
Bus All devices share one main cable; cheap; if the main cable fails, the whole network fails
Star All devices connect to a central hub or switch; easy to manage; if the hub fails, the network fails; most common in LAN
Ring Each device connects to two others in a circle; data moves in one direction
Mesh Every device connects to every other device; very reliable but costly
Tree A mix of bus and star topologies; arranged like a tree
Hybrid A combination of two or more topologies

Network Devices

Device Function
Modem Converts digital signals to analog and back (modulator-demodulator) to connect to the internet
Hub Connects many computers in a LAN and sends the data to all of them
Switch Connects computers in a LAN and sends data only to the right device; smarter than a hub
Router Connects different networks and finds the best path for data (for example, a home network to the internet)
Bridge Connects two LANs
Gateway Connects networks that use different protocols
Repeater Strengthens the signal over long distances
NIC (Network Interface Card) The card that connects a computer to a network

Transmission Media and Terms

  • Guided media (wired): twisted pair cable, coaxial cable and optical fibre. Optical fibre is the fastest and uses light.
  • Unguided media (wireless): radio waves, microwaves, infrared, satellite and Wi-Fi.
  • Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be sent in a given time (bits per second).
  • An IP address identifies every device on a network, and a MAC address is the unique hardware address of a NIC.
  • Client-server model: a client requests and a server provides the service.

History of Networks

Year Event
1969 ARPANET, the first packet-switching network, began in the USA
1971 First email sent by Ray Tomlinson
1973 Ethernet invented by Robert Metcalfe
1983 TCP/IP became the standard of ARPANET; the modern internet started
1989 Tim Berners-Lee proposed the World Wide Web
1995 VSNL started public internet service in India (15 August 1995)
2000s Broadband, Wi-Fi and 3G spread
2020s 5G networks

Network Types in More Detail

  • PAN connects personal devices within about 10 metres (Bluetooth).
  • LAN covers a building and uses Ethernet or Wi-Fi. It has a high speed and is owned by one organisation.
  • CAN (Campus Area Network) connects the LANs of a university or a campus.
  • MAN covers a city and can connect many LANs.
  • WAN covers countries using leased lines, satellites or the internet.
  • VPN (Virtual Private Network) makes a secure private network over the public internet.
  • Intranet is a private network of an organisation using internet technology; extranet gives limited access to outside partners; the internet is the public global network.
  • SAN (Storage Area Network) connects the storage devices to the servers.

Network Models

Model Features
Client-server A central server gives services to many clients; easy to manage and secure
Peer-to-peer (P2P) All computers are equal and share resources directly; cheap but less secure

Switching Techniques

Technique Meaning
Circuit switching A fixed path is made for the whole conversation, as in a telephone call
Packet switching The data is divided into packets that may take different paths and are joined at the destination; used on the internet
Message switching Whole messages are stored and forwarded from node to node

Transmission Media in Detail

Medium Details
Twisted pair cable Two wires twisted together; used in telephone and LAN (UTP and STP); cheap
Coaxial cable A copper core with a shield; used for cable TV; higher speed than a twisted pair
Optical fibre Carries data as light; very high speed, no electric noise, secure and costly
Radio waves Wireless; Wi-Fi, FM radio and Bluetooth
Microwaves Line-of-sight towers and satellites
Infrared Short distance, line of sight, remote controls
Satellite Covers large areas; used in TV, GPS and VSAT
  • The transmission modes are simplex (one direction only, such as a keyboard or a TV broadcast), half-duplex (both directions but one at a time, such as a walkie-talkie) and full-duplex (both directions at the same time, such as a phone call).
  • Bandwidth is the capacity of a channel. Latency is the delay in the transfer of data.

Wireless Technology and Mobile Generations

Technology Fact
Wi-Fi Wireless LAN based on IEEE 802.11
Bluetooth Short range, about 10 metres
NFC Very short range, contactless payment
1G Analog voice calls
2G Digital voice and SMS (GSM)
3G Mobile internet and video calls
4G (LTE) High-speed broadband and HD video
5G Very high speed, low latency, supports IoT
