Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most trending topics in SSC Computer Knowledge and current affairs. Questions come on the meaning of AI, the father of AI, machine learning, ChatGPT, the Government of India's AI plans and the full forms of AI terms. These artificial intelligence notes for SSC explain the topic in simple language with tables, the latest facts and practice questions. Read them along with the Cloud Computing and Emerging Technology Notes, Cyber Security and Cyber Crime Notes and Computer Fundamentals Notes notes.
What Is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial intelligence means making machines and computer programs that can do the work for which human intelligence is normally needed, such as learning, understanding language, recognising pictures, solving problems and taking decisions. An AI system learns from data, finds patterns in it and then uses them to give an output (a prediction, an answer, a picture or an action).
- The term "artificial intelligence" was coined by John McCarthy in 1955 and became popular at the Dartmouth Conference in 1956, so McCarthy is called the father of AI.
- Alan Turing asked "Can machines think?" in his paper of 1950 and proposed the Turing Test: if a human cannot tell whether he is talking to a machine or to a person, the machine is said to be intelligent.
- The first AI program, Logic Theorist, was written in 1955-56 by Allen Newell, Herbert Simon and Cliff Shaw.
- ELIZA (1966, Joseph Weizenbaum) was one of the first chatbots.
- IBM's Deep Blue defeated the chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997, and Google DeepMind's AlphaGo defeated the Go champion Lee Sedol in 2016.
- The study of how to make machines intelligent is a branch of computer science; the main fields are machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics and expert systems.
Types of Artificial Intelligence
| Basis | Type | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| By capability | Narrow AI (weak AI) | Does one task very well; all the AI that exists today is narrow AI | Voice assistants, face unlock, recommendation on YouTube, spam filter |
| By capability | General AI (strong AI) | A machine that can learn and do any intellectual task like a human; it does not exist yet | Research goal |
| By capability | Super AI | An imagined AI smarter than all humans | Science fiction at present |
| By function | Reactive machines | Respond to the present input and have no memory | IBM Deep Blue |
| By function | Limited memory | Use the past data for a short time | Self-driving cars, chatbots |
| By function | Theory of mind | Would understand the human emotions and beliefs | Under research |
| By function | Self-aware AI | Would have its own consciousness | Imaginary |
Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Neural Networks
Machine learning (ML) is a part of AI in which a computer learns from data without being programmed with every rule. The term was used by Arthur Samuel in 1959.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Supervised learning | The model learns from labelled data (the correct answers are given), for example, identifying spam emails |
| Unsupervised learning | The model finds the hidden groups in unlabelled data, for example, grouping the customers |
| Reinforcement learning | The model learns by trial and error and gets a reward for the right action, for example, game-playing AI and robots |
| Neural network | A computer model inspired by the human brain, made of layers of connected nodes (neurons) |
| Deep learning | Machine learning that uses neural networks with many layers; used for image, speech and language tasks |
| Algorithm and model | An algorithm is the set of steps; a model is the result of training the algorithm on data |
| Training and testing | Training teaches the model with data; testing checks how well it works on new data |
| Big data | Very large and varied data that is used to train AI |
- Geoffrey Hinton is called the "godfather of deep learning". He and John Hopfield received the Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 for the basic work on artificial neural networks and machine learning.
- In 2024, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was given to David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper for protein design and the AI tool AlphaFold that predicts the structure of proteins.
Main Fields of AI
| Field | What it does | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Natural Language Processing (NLP) | Understanding and producing human language | Chatbots, translation, voice assistants, Google Translate |
| Computer vision | Understanding images and videos | Face recognition, number plate reading, medical image scanning |
| Speech recognition | Converting speech into text | Alexa, Google Assistant, voice typing |
| Robotics | Machines that do physical tasks | Industrial robots, drones, surgical robots |

| Recommendation systems | Suggest what a user may like | Netflix, YouTube, online shopping sites |
| Autonomous systems | Machines that work with little human control | Self-driving cars, smart drones |
Generative AI, LLM and ChatGPT
Generative AI creates new content such as text, pictures, music, video and computer code, after learning from a very large amount of data. The text-based tools are built on large language models (LLMs), which are trained on huge amounts of text to predict and produce the next words. Most modern LLMs use the Transformer architecture, which was introduced by Google researchers in the paper "Attention Is All You Need" (2017).
| Tool or term | Fact |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | A chatbot of the company OpenAI, launched on 30 November 2022; GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer |
| Google Gemini | The AI model and chatbot of Google (the earlier chatbot was called Bard) |
| Claude | The AI assistant of the company Anthropic |
| Microsoft Copilot | The AI assistant of Microsoft in Windows and Office |
| DALL-E, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion | Tools that make pictures from a text description |
| Sora | A video generation model of OpenAI |
| Prompt | The instruction or question given to an AI tool; "prompt engineering" means writing good prompts |
| Hallucination | When an AI gives an answer that looks correct but is false |
| Bias | Unfair results caused by one-sided training data |
| Deepfake | A fake video, photo or voice made with AI that looks real |
| Token | A small piece of text that the model reads and writes |
| AI agent | An AI that can plan and complete a task with many steps with little help |
Uses, Benefits and Risks of AI
| Area | Use of AI |
|---|---|
| Education | Personal tutors, language learning, checking answers |
| Health | Reading X-rays and scans, finding new medicines |
| Agriculture | Crop disease detection, weather and price forecast |
