How Much Should You Study for Each Part?
Every year, the distribution changes, but General Science and History usually carry the largest part of the static questions, followed by Geography, Polity and Economy. Current affairs usually have 5 to 8 questions in a CGL paper. Do not spend more than 25% of your total time on GA, because the section can be improved through regular revision.
A Simple Plan to Cover GA in 3 Months
- Month 1: NCERT-based science (class 6 to 10) and history basics.
- Month 2: Geography, polity, economy and static GK lists.
- Month 3: Current affairs revision, previous year GA questions and sectional tests.
- Every day: 20 minutes for current affairs and 10 minutes for revision of the notes.
Tips to Score 20+ in GA
- Prepare short notes and revise them weekly.
- Use tables for lists (books and authors, national parks, awards).
- Solve previous year GA questions to learn the repeated topics.
- Take at least one GA sectional mock test every week.
- Do not guess questions on current affairs unless you can eliminate two options.

How to Study Current Affairs in a Smart Way
- Read one daily news summary or a monthly capsule instead of reading everything.
- Make short notes under heads: appointments, awards, sports, schemes, summits, defence and science.
- Revise the last month notes every Sunday.
- Solve current affairs MCQs once a week.
- Keep the last 6 months as the main revision period before the exam.
Common Mistakes in GA Preparation
- Reading too many sources and revising none of them.
- Learning facts without links and context.
- Ignoring static GK because it looks boring.
- Not solving previous year GA questions.
- Studying current affairs of more than one year when only the last 6 months are important.
A 90-Day Plan to Finish the General Awareness Syllabus
The General Awareness section is easy to underestimate. Many candidates prepare it in the last two weeks and lose marks on questions that are simple but need regular revision. A better approach is to treat GA like a small subject that needs 45 to 60 minutes every day. In the first month, finish the science part from NCERT books of classes 6 to 10, because science questions are frequent and the concepts are simple. In the second month, cover history, geography, polity and economy with short notes and maps, and prepare tables for static GK. In the third month, revise everything twice, add the current affairs of the last six months and solve sectional tests every week.
- Days 1 to 30: science from NCERT, modern history basics and one map reading session every week.
- Days 31 to 60: polity, economy, geography and static GK tables with weekly tests.
- Days 61 to 90: current affairs, repeated revision and previous year GA papers.
How to Avoid Negative Marking in GA
General Awareness questions are either known or unknown, so blind guessing can reduce your score. A smarter way is to attempt the question only if you know at least one fact that helps you to eliminate two options. If you can eliminate two options, the chance of a correct answer becomes 50 percent, which is a good risk in a paper with 0.50 negative marking. Avoid guessing in questions where all four options look equally possible. Over many mocks, track how many of your guesses were correct and use the data to decide how much risk you should take in the real exam.
