  • Solve one full mock test every week and analyse the weak areas.
  • Revise the previous year question papers to learn the level and the repeated topics.
  • Take care of your diet and sleep to stay fit for both the written test and the PET.

How Many Marks Are Needed? Understanding the SSC GD Cut Off

The cut off for SSC GD is different for every category, every state or force and also for male and female candidates because the number of vacancies differs. The cut off depends on the difficulty level of the paper, the number of vacancies and the number of candidates. A smart target is to attempt around 70 to 75 questions out of 80 with good accuracy. Check the previous year cut off of your category and aim to be 10 to 15 marks above it for safety.

Subject-Wise Preparation Strategy for SSC GD

Subject Marks What to do
Reasoning 40 Practise series, analogy, coding-decoding and classification daily for 45 minutes
General Knowledge 40 Prepare notes of static GK, science and current affairs for the last 6 months
Elementary Maths 40 Revise arithmetic: percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, time and work, mensuration
English or Hindi 40 Revise grammar rules and vocabulary, and practise error spotting and comprehension

You can choose Hindi or English for the language part. Choose the one in which you are more comfortable to save time and increase accuracy.

A Sample 90-Day Preparation Plan

Phase Days Plan
Foundation 1 to 30 Learn basics of all four subjects, start running practice, and solve 20 questions per subject daily
Practice 31 to 60 Topic-wise tests, static GK notes, daily running of 3 to 5 km and weekly sectional tests
Mock phase 61 to 90 Full mocks every alternate day, revision, PET practice and previous year papers

PET and PST: Start Early

  • Many candidates clear the written test but fail the PET. Do not leave running practice for later.
  • Check the height and chest requirements early. If you are short by a small margin, check whether you are eligible for relaxation.
  • Do not take any medicine or product to increase height or chest, and avoid fake promises.
  • Keep your medical fitness in mind: eyesight, flat foot and other conditions can lead to rejection.

Tips to Attempt the SSC GD Paper

  • Attempt the sections you are most comfortable with first.
  • Avoid guessing in the sections where you have no knowledge, because there is a 0.25 negative mark.
  • Do not spend more than 45 seconds per question.
  • Keep the last 3 minutes for review of the questions marked.
  • Practise the paper on a computer to get used to the interface.

Common Mistakes of SSC GD Aspirants

  • Preparing only for the written test and ignoring physical training.
  • Learning GK without revision and forgetting the facts.
  • Ignoring maths because it looks difficult.
  • Not practising in the same time limit as the exam.
  • Not keeping documents like the 10th certificate and category certificate ready.

Forces Where You Can Join Through SSC GD

  • Border Security Force (BSF): guards India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
  • Central Industrial Security Force (CISF): protects airports, metro, ports and industrial units.
  • Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF): works in internal security and law and order.
  • Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP): guards the Indo-China border in high-altitude areas.
  • Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB): works on the Nepal and Bhutan borders.
  • Assam Rifles and Secretariat Security Force (SSF): internal security and protection of government offices.
  • Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB): sepoy posts in anti-drug operations.

The vacancies for each force are given in the notification, and the force is allotted according to your merit and preference.

Revision Tips for the Last Month Before SSC GD

  • Revise your notes and formula list once every week.
  • Take at least 10 full-length mocks and note your section-wise accuracy.
  • Do a small revision test of 20 GK questions every morning.
  • Keep running 4 to 5 days a week and rest on the other days.
  • Sleep for 7 hours and eat a balanced diet to keep your body ready for both the exam and the PET.

The CBT has 80 questions of 2 marks each (160 marks) in 60 minutes, divided into four parts: reasoning, GK and GA, elementary maths and English or Hindi.

2. Is there negative marking in SSC GD?

Yes. 0.25 mark is deducted for every wrong answer in the CBT.
